Jessica Shand (flute), 17, is from Colorado Springs, Colorado and will enter the Harvard University/New England Conservatory dual degree program in the fall. She studies with Brook Ferguson, principal of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO). This is Jessica’s second summer with NYO-USA; she really enjoyed being in the orchestra last summer, especially working with NYO2 and performing at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with Valery Gergiev. Outside of music, Jessica loves science research, skiing, hiking, learning languages, reading, and is a second-degree black belt in taekwondo.
